Pipe Supports
Thermal insulation pipe supports prevent direct heat transfer (thermal bridging) between the pipe and its support structure, minimizing heat loss or gain and preventing condensation. They are designed to carry the pipe’s load and allow for movement while maintaining the thermal integrity of the insulation system.
Insulated Supports (Shoes/Blocks)
These are rigid, load-bearing inserts made of materials like phenolic foam, calcium silicate, or polyisocyanurate that fit between the pipe and the clamp/hanger.
Phenolic foam is a highly popular, cost-effective, and efficient option for a wide range of temperatures, particularly good for chilled water and LTHW systems.
Polyisocyanurate (PIR) is ideal for cold applications (down to -250°F or -157°C) and moderate hot lines, known for its high compressive strength and dimensional stability.
Cellular glass offers a completely impermeable vapor barrier, making it an excellent choice for cryogenic or damp environments where moisture ingress is a major concern.
Insulation Support Shields
These are metal shields (often galvanized for corrosion resistance) used in conjunction with standard pipe insulation and hangers to protect the insulation from crushing at the support point. They help distribute the load and ensure the insulation’s integrity is maintained.
